During your visit, your therapist will perform a detailed examination of your injury or site of pain. We will evaluate all possible structures involved including, muscles, tendons, ligaments, fascia, nerves, bones and joints. Our job is to understand why you are experiencing pain, what needs to be addressed and how long it will take. After a thorough explanation of our findings, a treatment plan will be designed to help achieve your outlined goals. Depending on the outcome of the examination, some form of treatment may be included during your first visit.
Do you only treat athletes?
No. At Kick, in addition to sports injuries, we also treat post-surgical conditions, repetitive strain injury (RSI), muscle imbalances, posture-related pain, movement impairments, and traumatic injury. It doesn't matter how you got your injury — our experienced and elite-trained physiotherapists will assess your problem and design a treatment plan specific to your needs.
Who will see me at the clinic?
You will be evaluated by one of our licensed and highly trained physical therapists and he/she will also treat you during subsequent visits. Unlike some clinics, where you see someone different each visit, we feel it is very important to develop a one-on-one relationship with you to maintain continuity of care. Since only one therapist knows your problems best, he/she is the one that will be working closely with you to speed your recovery.
What should I bring with me?
Make sure to bring any pertinent test results, such as X-Ray, Ultrasound or MRI results. You may also bring your doctor's referral or prescription (if you have one). Also please bring appropriate clothing (see below). If you wear orthotics, please bring those as well. If you forget any of the above-mentioned items, you may still bring them during any subsequent visits.
How should I dress?
You should wear loose fitting clothing so you can expose the area that we will be evaluating and treating. For example, if you have a knee problem, it is best to wear shorts. For a shoulder problem, a tank top is a good choice, and for low back problems, wear a loose fitting shirt and pants, again so we can perform a thorough examination.
Do I need a doctor's referral?
With direct access to physiotherapy in Ontario, a doctor's referral is not necessary to receive treatments at Kick Physiotherapy & Sports Medicine. Note that some extended health benefit plan insurance companies still require a doctor's referral for reimbursement of physiotherapy treatments. It is the responsibility of the patient to check their coverage.
How often do I need to come to therapy?
Frequency of visits will depend on your individual problem or goals. Some clients seek treatment 2-3 times per week. Others may only come in once a week. Your physiotherapist or massage therapist will help determine how many visits you should attend per week, in order to help reach your goals sooner.
How long will each treatment last?
Each visit will last approximately 50-60 minutes. During this time, you will receive 20-40 minutes of hands-on manual therapy, followed by exercises, modalities, or heat/ice (depending on your injury or condition). If desired, acupuncture may also be included with your treatment. Please note that there is no extra cost for acupuncture.
Who pays for the treatment?
In most cases, private health insurance will cover your treatment of physiotherapy, massage therapy and orthotics. You must pay for your session following each session. A receipt will be issued. You will need to send the original receipts to your insurance company to be reimbursed along with the physician's referral (some insurance companies do not request a physician referral). Visa, Master Card, AMEX, Interact debit and Cash are accepted. You can talk to our receptionist so we can help you clarify the process.
Do you bill insurance companies directly?
No. All clients will be required to pay for their visit out-of-pocket. You can get reimbursed for your treatment by submitting your invoices to your health care insurance company. All of our therapists are "registered health care practitioners". If you have physiotherapy or massage therapy coverage, you will get reimbursed for our services.
Do you treat WSIB and MVA clients?
Unfortunately, as a private clinic we do not engage in direct billing with insurance companies and Workplace Safety Insurance Board. For this reason, we currently do not treat WSIB and MVA injuries.
